Dr. Douglas “Doug” Shaw was born and raised in Salt Lake City Utah where he graduated with honors from the University of Utah with a B.S. in Medical Biology. During his undergraduate education he took a two-year hiatus to volunteer as a missionary for his church on the islands of Samoa in the South Pacific where he experienced the culture and found a place in his heart for service.
Dr. Shaw received his Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree from SUNY Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, New York’s #1 research University. He graduated #1 in his class (Summa Cum Laude) and received a number of clinical and academic honors including election into the prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon (National Dental Honor Society). During his dental education, Dr. Shaw participated in numerous outreach programs and served on the organization committee of the first ever BOCA (Buffalo Outreach & Community Assistance) dental mission trip to the Kingdom of Tonga in the South Pacific.
Dr. Shaw has always had a passion for orthodontics and was fortunate to receive his Certificate from NOVA Southeastern University where he learned the skills necessary to improve his patients’ lives by creating functional and esthetically pleasing smiles. Dr. Shaw was awarded a Masters of Science (M.S.) degree for his thesis on digital vs. analog cranial base cephalometric superimpositions. His training has exposed him to a wide variety of treatment modalities and techniques.
Unlike most orthodontists, Dr. Shaw was fortunate to be exposed to topics such as cosmetic dentistry and esthetic evaluation of the micro-esthetics of the soft and hard tissue of the face. Resultantly, Dr. Shaw believes that every patient deserves to have a smile designed for their individual case, taking into account their specific tooth shape, the movement of their lips, and shape of their face. This individualized approach and the compilation of all of the aspects of dentistry that play a role has been termed “smile design”.
Dr. Shaw is also one of the few dentists in the world to have been extensively trained in “Digital Co-Diagnosis”, a process in which digital technology allows the patient to play a central role in the treatment planning process. The result is an engaged, better-informed patient who becomes an active partner in the treatment plan design
Having lectured internationally, Dr. Shaw enjoys working with local general dentists and specialists alike; helping create treatment plans to better serve patients’ needs and educate the local community on topics related to orthodontics and development of the facial structures.
Dr. Shaw is an active member in many dental associations including the American Association of Orthodontics (AAO) and is a lifelong learner. He is always eager to learn the latest and greatest techniques to assist in treatment. Dr. Shaw says “there is no better feeling than seeing a big grin on his patients’ faces when their braces are removed.”
As an active person, Dr. Shaw enjoys just about any sport or outdoor activity. Much of his leisure time is spent experiencing new places and activities alongside his wife and children. Doug and his family are active members of their local church and feel blessed to call Texas their home.
